There are a number of lodges and tented camps in the Serengeti area, both inside the national park and in the areas bordering it. In addition, some safari tour operators have their own mobile camps, which are pitched seasonally or when needed, usually in "controlled/special camp sites" (i.e. camp sites that can be booked exclusively, and that are not open for campers); such private mobile camps are not listed below. "Public camp sites" for camping are found mainly in Seronera in central Serengeti.
 
Seronera and central Serengeti

Seronera Wildlife Lodge.Seronera Wildlife Lodge has the most central location among the lodges in Serengeti. It is built in a kopje, and has good views of the savanna to the west of the observation terrace. There are 75 tourist class rooms, restaurant and bar. Hyrax, mongoose and agama lizards are often seen within the lodge area, and all kinds of animals may be seen in the surrounding bush.

Serengeti Sopa Lodge.Serengeti Sopa Lodge in the south-western parts of central Serengeti is built on a hill and has good savanna views. The lodge has 80 rooms, restaurant, bar, swimming pool and gift shop. The standard is good.

Serengeti Serena SafariLodge.Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge north-west of central Serengeti is set on a ridge in the hills, overlooking the savanna. It has 66 rooms, restaurant, bar, swimming pool etc, and very good standard.

Bilila Lodge Kempinski.Bilila Lodge Kempinski is a fairly new lodge offering very high standard. Its 77 rooms makes it one of the largest in Serengeti, and its design makes it rather a modern designer hotel than a traditional safari lodge.

Ikoma Tented Camp.Ikoma Tented Camp is a tourist class tented camp situated outside the park border of central Serengeti. It has 31 tents, a restaurant and a good bush feeling. The camp offers bush walks and night game drives.

Grumeti Luxury Tented Camp.Grumeti Luxury Tented Camp is a new tented camp situated outside the park border of central Serengeti, not very far from the Grumeti River. It has eight tents with ensuite bathrooms and verandas. The central area has restaurant, bar, viewing deck and fireplace. A swimming pool is planned. The camp offers game drives, bush walks, bird watching and balloon safaris. Children younger than seven years are not allowed in the camp.

Serengeti Medium Camp. Serengeti Medium Camp has 20 tents with ensuite bathroom. It's set in the Makoma Hill area west of Seronera in central Serengeti. Meals are served in a mess tent.

The owners use the description "mobile camp", but it doesn't appear to be moved between different sites, so with our difinition it's not a mobile camp.

Grumeti Wildlife Camp is a planned sister camp to Grumeti Luxury Tented Camp, planned to open early in 2010. It is to be situated some 5 km/3 mi from its sister camp and to offer lower range standard and pricing.

Mbuzi Mawe is a new luxury tented camp built in a kopje north of Seronera in central Serengeti, off the road that goes north towards Lobo. It has 16 spacious tents, restaurant, bar and gift shop.

Gol, Ndutu and the south

Ndutu Safari Lodge.Ndutu Safari Lodge (Ngorongoro Conservation Area) is situated close to soda lake Lake Ndutu on the border between south-eastern Serengeti National Park and western Ngorongoro Conservation Area (the lodge is on the NCA side of the border). The area can be very good for game viewing from December to March, when vast numbers of animals may be present. The Ndutu area is generally good for cats.

Lake Masek Tented Camp.Lake Masek Tented Camp is a new tented camp close to Lake Masek in western Ngorongoro Conservation Area, i.e. in the Lake Ndutu area. The camp has 20 tents and a restaurant. The activities offered include game drives, bush walks and night game drives.

Kusini is an exclusive tented camp with 12 tents in southern Serengeti, set among kopjes in a remote part of the park where few visitors come, apart from those staying in the camp. The overall quality and service is very good, and the location fine for game viewing. The area may be good for seeing the migration during January to March.

Lobo and the north

Lobo Wildlife Lodge.Lobo Wildlife Lodge in northern Serengeti is a tourist class lodge set on a hill and offers great savanna views to the east and west. The lodge has 75 rooms, restaurant, bar, swimming pool with a view and a waterhole.

Migration Camp.Migration Camp is a tented camp offering high standard, and is situated by the Grumeti River in the northern parts of Serengeti. The tents are spacious and comfortable, and have private bathrooms and verandas. The camp has restaurant, bar and a swimming pool.

Klein's Camp is an exclusive camp in a private concession just east of northern Serengeti, not very far from the Kenyan border. It has ten cottages, restaurant, bar and swimming pool. The safari activities arranged include game drives at day and night, and bush walks.

Sayari Camp is a sister camp of Olakira, and is set in the Mara River area of northmost Serengeti, and offers the same concept of a small camp (eight tents) in the middle of the bush and a true safari atmosphere. Driving off-road is allowed in parts of these northern areas.

Suyan Camp, sister camp to Olakira and Sayari, is set in Loliondo Game Controlled Area east of Lobo in northern Serengeti, i.e. outside of the park. This allows for activities not allowed inside the park, such as night game drives and walking safaris. There are five guest tents, and the same bush atmosphere as offered by the sister camps.

Loliondo Camp is a small camp of five tents in the Loliondo area just east of Lobo in northern Serengeti. The standard is tourist class, and the camp area is private and right in the bush. As the camp is outside of the national park, the activities include not only daytime game drives, but also night game drives and bush walks.

The Western corridor

Kensington Serengeti Wilderness Camp.Kensington Serengeti Wilderness Camp is a luxury tented camp in the Kirawira area of the Western corridor, a 20-minute drive from Grumeti airstrip. It has eight tents.

Mbalageti Serengeti is a fairly new and good lodge in the Western corridor in Serengeti. It has some 20 rooms and two suites, restaurant, bar, gift shop, swimming pool and good views overlooking the surroundings.

Singita Grumeti Reserves
 
Sabora Tented Camp in private Singita Grumeti Reserves north of the Western corridor in Serengeti is a luxury camp with six air-conditioned tents with ensuite bathrooms, electronic safes, phone, wireless Internet, satellite television and heated swimming pool. The camp offers game drives and bush walks, plus for example badminton, mountain biking, tennis and spa.

Sasakwa Lodge is, like its sister camp Sabora, set in private Singita Grumeti Reserves. This luxury lodge has six cottages and a villa for up to 28 guests all in all. The cottages have air-conditioning, bar, safe, ensuite bathroom, heated infinity pool etc. Some cottages have wheelchair access. Like Sabora, the lodge is set close to the bush, but has rather a colonial luxury atmosphere than a bush feeling. The same typeof activities are offered, plus horse riding.

Faru Faru Lodge is, like its sisters Sabora and Sasakwa, set in private Singita Grumeti Reserves. It has a more contemporary style than its sister lodges, and faces a waterhole that attracts wildlife. The lodge has six air-conditioned suites, and offers the same level of luxury and the same kind of activities as Sabora and Sasakwa.

Mobile camps
 
Nduara Loliondo Camp offers accommodation in six spacious and stylish yurts (a kind of mobile tents/huts originally used by nomads in central Asia), and bush style bathroom facilities; short drop toilets and bucket showers. This semi-mobile camp is moved twice every year between areas east of Serengeti National Park, following the migration. The setting outside of the park allows for night game drives and bush walks.

Serengeti Safari Camp is a semi-mobile tented camp pitched in different areas of Serengeti, including the southern plains, the Western corridor and northmost Serengeti, depending on the migration season. The camp has six safari tents (for up to 12 guests) with ensuite bathrooms, and is pitched right in the bush. Expect a true safari atmosphere.

Olakira Camp is a semi-mobile tented camp moving between southern (December–March) and central (June–November) Serengeti depending on season. It has six traditional safari tents set right in the bush, each with ensuite bathroom, and two tents for dining and socializing.

Serengeti Camp (or Kirurumu Serengeti Camp) is a sister camp to Loliondo Camp, but unlike the latter situated within Serengeti National Park. It's semi-mobile, moved seasonally to follow the migration and other wildlife; December–March in southern Serengeti, from June in the Western Corridor, and later during the dry season towards Seronera in central Serengeti. Like Loliondo Camp, it has five tents, and the same standard.

Lemala Luxury Camp Serengeti is a semi-mobile camp that moves seasonally between the Ndutu area of southern Serengeti (December–March) and northern Serengeti (June–October). Ngorongoro Conservation Area

There is a handful of lodges, a few tented camps (and a camping site) on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, but no accommodation on the crater floor, i.e. down in the crater. It is also possible to stay in or around Karatu Town south-east of the crater, and visit the crater on a day tour. Some other lodges and tented camps are situated in western Ngorongoro Conservation Area, i.e. in areas bordering Serengeti National Park.

Rhino Lodge.Rhino Lodge re-opened in 2007, after being closed for many years. It is smaller than the other lodges on the crater rim, offers basic accommodation (i.e. is a budget option), and doesn't offer a crater view. The lodge has 24 rooms with private bathrooms and verandas. There is a restaurant, a lounge and a four-wheel drive rental.

Lemala Luxury Camp Ngorongoro is a tented camp on the north-eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the more quiet part of the rim. The camp has eight guest tents, i.e. capacity for 16 guests, with ensuite bathrooms, and have pleasant safari style interiors. The tents have heaters and warm duvets, as the temperatures may be quite cool because of altitude and winds.

Karatu and surroundings

Plantation Lodge.Plantation Lodge is a tourist class lodge just outside Karatu Town south-east of Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The food is good, and the lodge has a pleasant garden.

Lutheran Guesthouse.Lutheran Guesthouse offers budget accommodation and meals in Karatu Town. The rooms are basic, and have private toilets and showers.

Crater Forest Tented Camp.Crater Forest Tented Camp lies in a coffee farm just outside NCA, off the main road from Karatu to NCA. It's a fairly small lodge with 15 tented rooms with ensuite bathrooms and verandas with views. The lodge offers cultural tours to surrounding villages, tours in the coffee farm and escorted bush walks into the nearby forest of NCA.

Ngorongoro Farm House. Ngorongoro Farm House is a 50-room lodge between Karatu Town and the Lodoare gate into Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The rooms are in chalets, and include doubles, twins and triples. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms and mosquito nets. The lodge has a swimming pool and Internet, and offers for example guided walks in the surroundings and into NCA.

Tloma Lodge. Tloma Lodge is outside Karatu and has a main building and 20 cottages. The rooms have private bathrooms and verandas. There is a restaurant, a swimming pool and Internet.

Gibb's Farm is another nice farmhouse lodge near Karatu, and is similar to Plantation Lodge. The rooms are basic but well kept. The lodge, which is really a coffee farm, is known for its good food.

Bougainvillea Safari Lodge is a 24-cottage lodge between Karatu Town and the Lodoare gate into Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The cottages are self-contained doubles, but also triples and family rooms are available. The lodge has a restaurant and a bar, and offers activities such as bird watching, nature walks and cultural visits to Karatu or local villages.

Octagon Safari Lodge is a small lodge built in an old colonial farm house. The rooms are set in a garden, and have a four-poster beds, mosquito nets, veranda, ensuite bathroom and terrace. There is a restaurant, an Irish bar and a garden with kitchen garden.

Lake Manyara National Park

There is one lodge within the park, and a number of lodges and tented camps outside it. There are camping sites and bandas just outside the park's main entrance.
 

Kirurumu Tented Lodge.Kirurumu Tented Lodge is built above the rift escarpment north-west of the national park, offering views of Lake Manyara, the Great Rift Valley and Losiminguri Mountain. There are 22 tents, of which 16 are spacious safari tents, and 6 are family rooms and suite. There is a restaurant and a bar.

Lake Manyara Hotel.Lake Manyara Hotel is a tourist class hotel/lodge built above the rift escarpment west of the national park. It has very good views of the lake and the park. There are 95 rooms, restaurant, bar and a garden swimming pool.

Migunga Tented Camp.Migunga Tented Camp is a tourist class tented camp some km/mi north-east of the park. The 19 tents have verandas and private bathrooms. There is a restaurant and a bar. The forest surrounding the camp, mainly consisting of yellow-barked acacias, has some interesting bird life.

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is a fairly new and exclusive lodge in the southern part of the park (where it replaces the former tented camp Maji Moto). There are ten rooms, or tree houses, built in mahogany trees.

E Unoto Retreat is a lodge designed to resemble a Maasai village, situated in the plains below the Great Rift Valley escarpment. There are 25 bungalows with ensuite bathrooms. Four of the bungalows have wheelchair access. The lodge has an open-air restaurant, a bar and a swimming pool.

Wild Africa Manyara Lodge is a tourist class lodge set on the lower slopes of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment and has wide views over the rift valley plains. There are ten rooms with private balconies, restaurant and bar with seating indoors and outdoors, and a swimming pool in a lodge garden.

Kibiko Bushcamp is a budget tented camp in the Great Rift Valley, not very far from Lake Manyara National Park. It offers accommodation in basic safari tents with ensuite bathrooms, meals, and various outings in the area.

Manyara Safari Lodge (under construction) is a luxury tented lodge presently being built on the shore of Lake Manyara, outside the national park. It will initially have 10 tents, and more will be added gradually. Good standard and comfort can be expected.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire Safari Lodge.Tarangire Safari Lodge is a tourist class tented camp situated in the northern part of Tarangire, some 10 km/6 mi south of the park's main entrance. The lodge has 35 tents, 5 bungalows, restaurant, bar, gift shop and swimming pool. It has a good view, overlooking the woodland savanna and the Tarangire River. Animals of all kinds may pass through the camp area at night.

Tarangire Treetops.Tarangire Treetops is outside eastern Tarangire, a one-hour drive south from the main road from Arusha. It's an exclusive lodge, offering rooms in tree houses, restaurant, bar and swimming pool. A waterhole next to the lodge attracts wildlife, especially during dry seasons.

Lake Burunge Tented Camp.Lake Burunge Tented Camp has 16 tented rooms with ensuite bathroom and a private veranda, and a main building with lounge and dining area. It's set in the bush some 30 km/19 mi north-west of Tarangire National Park, overlooking Lake Burunge.

Maramboi Tented Camp.Maramboi Tented Camp is situated north of Tarangire, towards Lake Manyara (on the opposite side of the lake from Lake Manyara National Park). There are 20 rooms in tents, a swimming pool and a restaurant.

The camp claims the area to be the best place in East Africa to see migrating herds of wildebeest and zebras, which is not correct. You should go to Serengeti or Masai Mara for that.

Swala Tarangire is an exclusive tented camp in south-western Tarangire, far from the other lodges and camps.

Kikoti Tented Camp is a small camp outside the north-eastern park border, set in a wildlife area. There are eight tents. The camp offers bush walks and night game drives.

Tamarind Tented Camp is a tourist class tented camp just east of Tarangire's northern tip, some 10 km/6 mi off the main road from Arusha. The camp has ten tents and a restaurant tent.

Boundary Hill Lodge is a new lodge situated in a private conservation area just east of Tarangire National Park. The location allows for activities that are not allowed inside the national park, such as night game drives and bush walks. The lodge has eight rooms, all with ensuite bathroom and private balcony with a view. The lodge is powered by solar panels and wind turbines, and rainwater is collected for use.

Naitolia is a small eco-lodge in a private conservation area to the north-east of Tarangire National Park. The lodge is built from local renewable materials, and offers night game drives, bush walks, a treehouse fly-camp and a setting close to the bush.

Roika Tarangire Tented Lodge is a lodge of 21 tented rooms, situated outside Tarangire National Park about 5 km/3 mi from the northern main gate. The tents have ensuite bathrooms with showers and bubble bath, and a private wooden veranda. There is a lounge, a business centre and a swimming pool.

Lake Eyasi

Makoa Farm (Machame) is mainly a horseback riding lodge just south of Kilimanjaro, but can also be used for a overnight stays in connection with mountain climbs, or for relaxed farm vacations. It is owned by two veterinaries and former professional endurance riders, and has some 25 horses and a variety of other farm animals. Drive an hour southwards on the bush road from Mkomazi park gate to Kisiwani village, where you (after asking for directions) turn right into the mountains for a one-hour drive on a very, very poor mountain road to the lodge. Musoma
Musoma is one hour by road from Ndabaka Gate in western Serengeti National Park, but few safari-goers visit this town.

Peninsula Hotel.Peninsula Hotel is a basic hotel in a residential area in the outskirts of Musoma, within walking distance from the shore of Lake Victoria. The hotel is in what looks like a re-built former colonial private home. The rooms have ensuite bathrooms, and there is a basic restaurant and bar next door.
 

Mwanza
Not very many safari-goers come to Mwanza on the southern shore of Lake Victoria, as this is too far west from the good safari region of northern Tanzania. Mwanza is one of the largest cities in the country, and has a large harbour and a domestic airport (MWZ/HTMW).

Hotel Tilapia.Hotel Tilapia is set on the very shore of Lake Victoria in Mwanza, and offers tourist class accommodation. There are four restaurants, bars and a swimming pool. Tilapia has 40 rooms, of which most are modern and equipped with air conditioning, safe, Internet and refrigerator. A handful of rooms are in a huge boat, named The African Queen, offering stylish interiors, sadly well past their prime. When staying on this boat, we found rat droppings and a host of lake flies in the room.

Selous Wilderness Camp.Selous Wilderness Camp is a new tented camp, opened in 2009, situated south of the Rufijij River outside of eastern Selous Game Reserve. Acess to the camp is by boat from the northern shore of the river. Selous Wilderness Camp has seven tents with ceiling fan and outdoor shower, a mess tent and a swimming poool.

Selous Riverside Safari Camp. Selous Riverside Safari Camp is a good tented camp set by the Rufiji River just east of Selous, outside the Mtemere Gate. It has ten tents with ensuite bathrooms and interiors in a fairly contemporary safari style. There is a dining area and a swimming pool. The camp offers game drives, boat safaris, bush walks and balloon safaris.

The Retreat. The Retreat is a luxury lodge in the remote south-western part of northern Selous, set on a small hill along the Great Ruaha River and built around a fort. The lodge has six spacious tents on the hill, and four luxury suites by the river. A river hideaway has two more tented suites with private plunge pools, a swimming pool, and private staff, vehicle and boat. Lukula Selous Camp is a camp in Lukula Selous, a 1,200 km2/470 sq mi private photographic sanctuary in the park. Only one group of maximum eight guests is allowed to stay in the sanctuary at a time. The camp is a mobile tented camp, pitched in a scenic area on the banks of the Luwegu River for dry seasons from July to November only. There are four tents with stylish interiors and ensuite bathrooms with flush toilets, solar power and a mess tent. The main safari activities are game drives, bush walks and canoe safaris.

There are two camps/lodges, a camping site and bandas in the park. The camps/lodges are often referred to as luxury, but the standard is not really luxury, rather a fairly good standard seen in many good camps. Much of the true luxury is the remoteness and the beautiful location; the camp/lodge on the beach in front of a deep forest, and the Mahale Mountains for a backdrop.

Greystoke Mahale.Greystoke Mahale (formerly Zoe's Camp) is a good lodge on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, a little bit south of Nkungwe. It has an overall exotic atmosphere. There are six bungalows with ensuite bathrooms and verandas facing the lake, a central restaurant building, and lounging areas. The lodge offers chimpanzee tracking, canoeing, dhow tours, walks, fishing, swimming and snorkelling. You normally need to book this lodge a very long time before travelling.

Lake Tanganyika
Lake Tanganyika (675x80 km/420x50 mi in size and 1,440 m/4,700 ft deep) on the western border of Tanzania is the longest and deepest lake in Africa. It has some 250 species of fish, of which many are endemic to the lake.

Lupita Island Resort and Spa is a luxury hotel situated on Lupita Island, a 0.5 km2/110 ac island (just west of Kiranda on the mainland) in the southern half of Lake Tanganyika. The hotel has 14 spacious villas with private veranda decks with views, restaurant, lounge bar, infinity pool, games room, gift shop, Internet, gym, spa and sauna. The activities offered include fishing, canoeing, boat cruises, snorkelling and sailing. The best way getting there is by charted flight to the mainland airstrip, followed by a short speedboat transfer to the hotel.

Kigoma
Kigoma is a Tanzanian town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Divers or visitors to Gombe Stream or Mahale Mountains may end up in Kigoma for overnight stays in connection with their activities.

Kigoma Hilltop Hotel is a good hotel situated just outside Kigoma, facing Lake Tanganyika. It has 30 bungalows with ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, and verandas with good views of the lake. All rooms have satellite television, refrigerator and telephone. The hotel has three restaurants, swimming pool, private beach, gym, tennis courts and playground.
