Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel
Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel is a medium sized hotel on the northern tip of Zanzibar. The standard is very good and the atmosphere quiet. The hotel has a fairly secluded beach, which is fine for bathing during booth high and low tide. There are good dive sites nearby, and the hotel offers serious deep-sea fishing.

The rooms
Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel has 32 rooms in different categories. They all have private bathroom, balcony, mosquito nets, air conditioning, fan, hairdryer and safe. 13 lodge rooms have a garden view, and 12 superior chalet rooms have a sea view.

6 superior deluxe chalet rooms also have mini bar and other additional features. 1 ocean suite also has its own sun terrace, private plunge pool and 140 sq m/1,500 sq ft of living space. The rooms are doubles, but extra beds can be added in some of them.
Meals and features
Most guests have half board included, which means breakfast and five-course dinner. The restaurant has an international kitchen with African and Zanzibari influences, and also offers lunches à la carte.

Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel also has a bar with spacious lounge, a gift shop, a TV room with satellite television, and a small library.

There is a swimming pool and a PADI dive and water sports centre, offering dive courses, dive tours, snorkelling, dhow tours, wind surfing and water skiing.

Deep-sea fishing
Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel co-operates with Pemba Channel Fishing Club and offers professionally equipped boats for serious fishing for marlin, tuna, sailfish and other species around both Zanzibar and Pemba Island to the north. The boats are equipped with GPS, sonar and fish finder, carry Shimano, Fenwick, Harnell and KC rods, and reels from Shimano and Penn, with 80, 50 and 30 lb lines.

August to November is a good season for yellowfin tuna, also offering good chances for blue, black and striped marlin, and sailfish. November to March is a good seson for striped marlin, and to some extent also for big blue marlin and black marlin. Night fishing for broadbill is also offered.

Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel is one of our favourite hotels in Zanzibar. It has good quality and a quiet atmosphere. The beach is good, and very secluded beach areas for walking and bathing are nearby.

Much more expensive Mnemba Island Lodge, located on Mnemba Island off north-eastern Zanzibar, offers more privacy, but not as good standard.

More about Zanzibar
Zanzibar Island off the Tanzanian coast features white beaches, palm trees and pleasant bathing temperatures, as well as good snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing. Many visitors go for day tours to spice plantations, historical sites or Stonetown, the historic trading town that is today part of Zanzibar town.
It is easy to combine a stay on Zanzibar Island with a safari on the Tanzanian or Kenyan mainland, due to a number of daily scheduled flight connections.

Beach holidays
Zanzibar Island has many nice and long beaches, offering white sand, palm trees and a warm water. The beaches are not crowded, and there are still all desolate beaches in some areas. Most beaches are shallow, making some of them less attractive for bathing at low tide. Beach boys and peddlers are not very common.

Snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing
The reefs surrounding the island host a rich marine life, and there are many good sites for snorkelling and diving. Many beach hotels and resorts have their own dive centre, or cooperate with external centres, and it's usually easy to arrange trips to good sites. Some good hotels have well-equipped boats for deep-sea fishing for tuna, sailfish, broadbill and marlin. If your hotel hasn't, fishing can be arranged externally.

Zanzibar Island has limited wildlife. Apart from birds, most animals live in the sea.

A holiday on Zanzibar can easily be combined with a safari on the Tanzanian mainland. A number of daily scheduled flights connect Zanzibar with parks on both the northern (Serengeti, Ngorongoro etc) and southern (Selous, Mikumi and Ruaha) safari circuits. Flight connections with Nairobi are also good, allowing for combinations with safaris in Kenya.

Day tours
Both hotels and external operators offer day tours to different places of interest around the island, such as spice plantations, historical sites, Jozani Forest (where you can see an endemic monkey, the Zanzibar red colobus), Prison Island and Stonetown, the historic trading town. Trips by boat are also offered, for example dolphin safaris, sunset cruises and fishing tours.
